Gunshots Heard In Hong Kong As Police Battle Angry Crowds On First Day Of Chinese New Year
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/08/2016 13:49 -050017 months after the "Umbrella Revolution", the streets of Hong Kong have once again turned chaotic on the first day of the Chinese New Year.
As SCMP reports, "police attempted to clear a street as part of a city-wide clampdown on hawkers," and before long, the situation deteriorated into an all-out melee complete with baton swinging and reports of gunshots.
"Earlier, the police engaged in another standoff with the crowds as they tried to block a taxi that was passing through, in retaliation at the clearance of the vendors," SCMP goes on to report. "Police came back later after a withdrawal."
“It was good in the beginning. I was chatting with the police,” one man, known only as "Kam", said. "[Then] they suddenly sprayed my face even though I told them I just wanted to go."
Obviously that's no fun and as you can imagine, the crowd wasn't pleased with the extreme measures employed by the authorities.
Below, find some visuals from the scene.
